We want to share with you why Portugal is a fantastic destination for LGBTQ+ families, offering a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and acceptance and our top accomodation tip!
Progressive Legal Environment:
Portugal has a long-standing reputation as one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly countries in the world. In 2010, it became the eighth country to legalize same-sex marriage, setting a precedent for LGBTQ+ rights across Europe. The country also prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in both employment and public services. This legal foundation ensures that LGBTQ+ families can feel safe and protected during their stay.
Welcoming and Inclusive Culture
Portuguese people are renowned for their warm hospitality and accepting attitudes, making it an ideal destination for queer travellers. Major cities like Lisbon and Porto are known for their lively LGBTQ+ communities, vibrant nightlife, and inclusive events. The annual Lisbon Pride Parade, held in June, attracts thousands of participants and spectators, creating an atmosphere of celebration and unity.
LGBTQ+-Friendly Accommodations
Portugal boasts a wide range of LGBTQ+-friendly accommodations, from luxurious hotels to family-friendly resorts and cozy guesthouses. Many establishments actively advertise themselves as LGBTQ+-friendly, providing a welcoming and accepting environment for families. Several online platforms and travel agencies also specialize in LGBTQ+-friendly travel, offering tailored recommendations and resources to ensure a comfortable stay. We absolutely loved 4* Eden Resort in Albufeira. Not only did they welcome us with open arms, but they also are fantantastic at catering for larger famlies. We opted for a 2 bedroom villa for our family of 5. But they have smaller and larger apartments and villas available. Their on site annimation team are still talked about by my three years later! You can opt to go self catering, or take a break from meal planning and jump on their delicious and varied all inclusive offerings.
Beautiful Beaches and Natural Landscapes
Portugal’s diverse landscapes offer something for everyone, making it an excellent destination for families seeking adventure and relaxation. From the golden shores of the Algarve to the rugged cliffs of the Azores and the picturesque vineyards of the Douro Valley, Portugal provides an abundance of natural beauty to explore. Many beaches, particularly in the Algarve region, have gained popularity among LGBTQ+ travellers, creating a sense of community and acceptance.
Family-Oriented Activities and Attractions
Portugal offers numerous family-oriented activities and attractions that cater to all ages and interests. In Lisbon, visit the Oceanário de Lisboa, one of Europe’s largest and most impressive aquariums, or explore the enchanting history of the pastel-colored Pena Palace in Sintra. Families can also embark on boat tours along the picturesque Douro River or enjoy thrilling water parks and theme parks, ensuring an unforgettable experience for all family members.
Portugal stands as a shining example of a country that not only welcomes but actively celebrates LGBTQ+ families. With its progressive legal environment, inclusive culture, LGBTQ+-friendly accommodations, stunning landscapes, and family-oriented activities, Portugal offers an ideal holiday destination. Whether you’re looking for relaxation on the beach, exploring historic sites, or immersing yourself in vibrant LGBTQ+ communities, Portugal provides a safe and welcoming environment for all families to create beautiful memories together.
So pack your bags, embrace diversity, and embark on a memorable journey to Portugal—an inclusive haven for LGBTQ+ families.
