The Netherlands
This could be your next unforgettable destination
As the first country in the world to legalise gay marriage back in 2001 and home to the world’s oldest LGBTQ+ organisation, COC Nederland, the Netherlands’ commitment to equal rights is well established. As well as being home to the colourful cities of Amsterdam, the Netherlands is also a dream destination for cyclists.
Eminently flat, with some of the best cycle paths and infrastructure in the world, exploring this country on two (or four!) wheels is a great experience for active families. Small children will feel like giants upon entering the world of Madurodam in Scheveningen, which features small-scale replicas of the country’s most famous landmarks.
Elsewhere, Amsterdam’s NEMO Science Museum is a firm favourite with youngsters, while just outside the city, the Hans & Grietje Pannenkoekenhuis serves up pancakes in an upside-down house where tables float and floors move around.
Elle Says:
Forget cafe culture – Amsterdam is an ideal spot for a couple’s city-break. With more canals than Venice, ambling across bridges hand-in-hand is a wonderfully romantic way to see this exciting city.
